Obverse die signed by the artist F. Head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet decorated with Skylla who raises her right hand to her head, and a griffin on neck guard;
F above forehead / Bull butting right; tiny EV monogram on flank of bull, fish in exergue. Noe B2 (same dies); SNG ANS 957 (same dies); Basel 174 (same dies); HN Italy 1781. Toned, good VF, light porosity with a few small flan flaws. ($3000) Struck from the finest dies used by the Thourioi. The signature
F is sometimes equated with the known artist Phrygillos, but as HN notes, "the style is sufficiently homogeneous throughout to warrent a judgement." Whatever the identity of the artist,
F and his compatriot EV were master engravers in late 5th century Magna Graeca.
