LUCANIA, Thourioi. Circa 410-400 BC. AR Double Nomos (15.41 gm). Obverse die signed by the artist F. Head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet decorated with Skylla who raises her right hand to her head, and a griffin on neck guard; F above forehead / Bull butting right; tiny EV monogram on flank of bull, fish in exergue. Noe B2 (same dies); SNG ANS 957 (same dies); Basel 174 (same dies); HN Italy 1781. Toned, good VF, light porosity with a few small flan flaws. ($3000) Struck from the finest dies used by the Thourioi. The signature F is sometimes equated with the known artist Phrygillos, but as HN notes, "the style is sufficiently homogeneous throughout to warrent a judgement." Whatever the identity of the artist, F and his compatriot EV were master engravers in late 5th century Magna Graeca.
