THRACE, Abdera. Circa 473-470 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.22 gm). Griffin seated left, right foreleg raised; cicada before / Quadripartite incuse square. May,
Abdera -; AMNG II -; BMC Thrace -; SNG Copenhagen -. Toned VF, light porosity and granularity, thin surface cracks on obverse. Unpublished hybrid. ($1500)
This tetradrachm is apparently an unpublished hybrid, combining an obverse characteristic of May's Period IV early coinage (symbol, no magistrate's name), with a reverse charateristic of May's Period III (plain quadripartite incuse square, no magistrate's name). Whether this coin belongs to a very rare transitional issue, or is an unintentional mint mistake, it confirms May's contiguity of these periods.
