THRACE. Apollonia Pontika(?). Circa 475-450 BC. AR Siglos (5.25 gm). Gorgoneion / Quadripartite incuse punch. SNG Copenhagen -; SNG BM Black Sea -; SNG Stancomb -; Traité -; Asyut -. VF, rough surfaces. ($300)
The gorgoneion suggests an attribution to Apollonia, and the quadripartite incuse seems appropriate for the Thracian coast. However, the Persian siglos weight standard is not attested for any coins from that region, except for the somewhat later (last quarter of the 5th century BC) issues of Byzantion. A problematic coin that is possibly an example of the earliest coinage of Apollonia Pontika. BR>
