SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I. 312-280 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.66 gm). Susa mint. Struck circa 303/2 BC. Head of hero right, wearing helmet covered with panther skin / Nike standing right erecting trophy; monograms on either side of Nike's legs. SC 173.4; cf. Kritt, Susa 13 (A7/R-, unlisted reverse die); ESM 426; SNG Spaer -. Fine, scuff on cheek-piece. ($750)

There is much debate concerning the identity of the hero on the obverse. The most commonly named subjects are Alexander the Great, Seleukos, or a personification of Dionysos. See O.D. Hoover, "The Identity of the Helmeted Head on the 'Victory' Coinage of Susa," SNR 81 (2002), for the most recent treatment of this debate.
