CARTHAGE. Circa 221-201 BC. AR Half-Shekel (3.82 gm). Punic mint in Bruttium. Struck during the Second Punic War, circa 215-205 BC. Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right; uraei above. Jenkins & Lewis pl. 28, 3; Visona -; cf. Robinson,
Second, pg. 45, 4; Crawford,
CMRR, pg. 67; SNG Copenhagen 361. Attractively toned EF. Fine-style dies. ($500)
Though most references place the issue in central Italy, Crawford convincingly argues for a mint in Bruttium, which was a stronghold of Hannibal during his Italian campaign.
