SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Paltus. Septimius Severus. 193-211 AD. Æ 22mm (8.72 gm). AV KAI [CEOVHPOC...], laureate head right /
EGRH PALTHNWN, Tyche seated left, holding cornucopiae, river god at her feet. BMC Galatia -; SNG Copenhagen -; Mionnet -; Hunterian -. Apparently unpublished. VF, brown patina. ($150)
The
EGRH at the beginning of the reverse legend is enigmatic. Two coins of Severus (with Julia Domna) from Paltus in the Hunterian, pg. 209, 1 and 3, have a similar first word in the reverse legend,
EGGRHA. No satisfactory explanation of this word has been forthcoming.
