NERVA. 96-98 AD. AR Denarius (3.63 gm). Struck January-September 97 AD. Laureate head right / Libertas standing half-left, holding pileus and transverse sceptre. RIC II 19; BMCRE 46; RSC 113. Toned VF. ($200)
The reverse of this coin clearly shows that the die had been recut from an Aequitas type. Here, instead of the pileus normally asociated with the type, Libertas is seen holding the upper portion of a scale. On either side of the transverse sceptre, faint traces of the cornucopiae are also visible, as well as a portion of the original top, now incorporated into a more ornate sceptre head.
