ANTIQUITY. ROMAN ERA. Roman. Bronze steelyard scale (statera). Circa 3rd-4th Century AD. Length of balance beam: 325 mm (12 3/4 inches). Balance beam with suspension hook (missing) and four hooks for weighing, two hanging from chains on a U-shaped extension which probably held a balance pan. The beam is incised on three sides with graduated lines for pounds and ounces. Cf. A. Mutz, Römische Waagen und Gewichte aus Augst und Kaiseraugst, fig.13. Fine enamel-like patina, of the dark blue-green shade associated with fine bronzes from the Danube region. Excellent condition, only lacking one hook and with a few minor chips to the patina. ($1000)
