ANTIQUITY. ROMAN ERA. Roman. Bronze steelyard scale (statera). Circa 3rd-4th Century AD. Length of balance beam: 370mm (14 1/2 inches). Balance beam with suspension hook and two weighing hooks, one supporting hooks on chains for a balance pan (now detached and fragmentary). The beam is incised on three sides with graduated lines for pounds and ounces. Cf. A. Mutz, Römische Waagen und Gewichte aus Augst und Kaiseraugst, fig.13. Good condition, rough green patina. ($400)
