GREECE, Island of Thasos. Circa 1880s. Countermarked Turkish Æ 40 Para (19.86 gm) of Abdul Mejid, year 19 (KM 670). Two countermarks for churches on Thasos; KQou /T PNS, (XIL in small letters below) for the church of the Repose of the Virgin of Panagia, and TM/XM for the church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Mariai. Wilski G10-29 and G19-04. Base coin Fair, holed for wearing; c/m Fine. ($150)

Ottoman copper coins were countermarked for use in Greek communities under Turkish control, who continually suffered a shortage of coinage. Wilksi identifies the marks under the main legend of the Panagia c/m as a date (18--), but they appear to be small Greek letters.
