James I. 1603-1625. AR Shilling (32mm, 5.86 gm). Third coinage. Tower mint; im: lis, struck 1623-1624. Sixth crowned bust right; mm: lis (over trefoil?) / Coat-of-arms on shield; mm: lis. North 2124; SCBC 2668. Near VF, scratches in field.
The obverse die shows signs of die failure, and the mintmark appears to have been re-punched. The symbol underneath the lis on the obverse is indistinct, but most closely resembles a trefoil, which according to the references followed the lis mark in 1624, but was not used earlier for the third coinage series. An intriguing coin worthy of further research.
