KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.96 gm). Lysimacheia mint. Struck 297-281 BC. Head of deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena seated left, holding Nike, left elbow resting on her shield, spear behind; herm outer left, lion's head left and monogram above knee, monogram in exergue. Thompson -; Seyrig,
Trésors pg. 15, 50 (same dies). VF, toned. Overstruck, probably on an Alexander-type tetradrachm. Rare. ($750)
Although this variety does not appear in Thompson, the fine style and similarity to published specimens of Lysimacheia certainly places this coin among the lifetime issues there. Also, the fullness of the flan of this example clearly shows the correct reading of the monogram in the exergue, which is incorrectly recorded in Seyrig,
Trésors.
