TRAJAN. 98-117 AD. Æ Sestertius (23.40 gm). Struck 115 AD. Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / Trajan on horseback right, holding spear; behind, three soldiers advancing right, two of whom hold spears; before, one soldier advancing right, holding spear and shield. RIC II 662; BMCRE 1014; Hunter 372; Cohen 311. Good VF, brown patina, light smoothing in fields, minor roughness. Extremely rare. ($2000)
From the Tony Hardy Collection.This is the third known example of this coin, and is the only one not in a public collection; the other two are in the British Museum and the Hunter Coin Cabinet. The specific event commemorated by the reverse type is uncertain, but must relate to Trajan's ongoing Parthian campaign.
