SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS. 193-211 AD. AR Denarius (3.11 gm). Struck circa 206 AD. Laureate head right / Triumphal Arch of Septimius of four columns and three arches, surmounted by chariot with six horses between two equestrian statues. RIC IV 259; BMCRE 320; RSC 104. Choice VF, lightly toned, two small spots of encrustation on obverse. ($1500)

The Arch of Septimius Severus was constructed in 203 AD to commemorate his victories over the Parthians. The type was employed on coins to celebrate the fifteenth and tenth anniversaries of Severus and Caracalla respectively.
