CARACALLA. 212-217 AD. Æ Sestertius (27.23 gm). Struck 211-212 AD. Laureate bust right, drapery on left shoulder / Caracalla and Geta standing facing one another, clasping hands; Caracalla on left, facing right, holding reverse spear and being crowned by Liber who stands behind him; Geta on right, facing left, holding baton and being crowned by Hercules who stands behind him. RIC IV 508c; BMCRE 241; Cohen 30. Good VF, black patina, minor smoothing. Wonderful portrait. Rare. ($1500)
From the Tony Hardy Collection.This reverse type celebrates the concord of Caracalla and Geta during their joint reign. It was short-lived, however, as Geta was murdered not more than a year later at the direction of Caracalla.
