The gold Noble was introduced by Edward III in 1344. The impressive design of the king standing in a medieval ship with furled sale and a banner flying from the masthead was the largest English gold coin of its time. It circulated for the next 150 years with little design change. It circulated widely in Europe as was later much imitated by the mintmasters in the Lowlands.
