ROMAN ERA. Roman. Bronze Phallus. Circa 2nd-3rd century AD. Length 75mm. A large bronze phallus gripped by a right hand; balancing the phallus is a lion's head. Single large hole at the fulcrum point. Difficult to determine the function of this object, but the phallus was frequently used as the centerpiece of a
tintinabulum, where it would be decorated with bells and hung outside a home as a ward against evil spirits. This piece may have simply had a string of bells knotted through the central hole. Green and brown patina. ($300)
