ROMAN ERA. Roman. Bronze Shield Umbo. Circa 2nd-3rd century AD. Diameter 8 1/2 inches (21cm). A mastoid-shaped hammered shield umbo (decorative boss for a shield), with repoussé decoration of a laurel wreath surrounding a high peaked boss with floral scroll work and central "nipple". Overall pontillist pellet and scrollwork infilling. Several small holes around the perimeter for attachment; the four rosette-headed nails attaching it to its modern mounting board are ancient but probably not original. Glossy dark green patina, a few breaks along the rim. An exceptional piece of Roman paradeground equipment. ($1000)
