ROMAN ERA. Roman. Gold Shield Pendant with Carnelians. Circa 2nd century AD. 53mm high, total weight 7.73 gm. Shield-shaped pendant composed of two thin gold sheets welded together, the front with repoussé wedges and five carnelian inlays in cruciform design. Shield bordered by twisted wire, decorated with attached granules in annulets and spiral wire. Loops at top and bottom for attachments. Good condition, gold backing slightly wrinkled, loops shows sign of wear. ($1000)
