James IV. 1488-1513. 19th century electrotype Medallion (45mm, 36.49 gm). +IACOBVS IIII DEI GRATIA REX SCOTORVM, crowned and armored bust right / VTRVQVE, laureate bi-faced head of Janus set on a pedestal overlooking lochs and the sea. Filed edge. Hawkins 7 (Henry VIII). Good VF, irregular patina, especially dark over the face of James.
This electrotype was probably produced by Robert Ready, conservator at the British Museum from 1858, and succeded by his sons through the 1930's. The British Museum electrotypes are the only way to acquire many rare early medals of England and Scotland.
