KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.99 gm, 12h). Chalkis mint. Struck circa 290-287 BC. Diademed and horned head right / BASILEWS DHMHTRIOU, Nude Poseidon standing left, right foot on rock, holding trident in left hand; monograms to outer left and right. Newell 151 (dies CLVII/303); cf. AMNG III 9-11; SNG Alpha Bank 953 var. (different control marks); SNG München -; Hunterian pg. 337, 4 (same dies); cf. SNG Berry 343. Good VF, toned, obverse die rust, minor smoothing in fields. Struck from dies of the finest style. ($1000)

From the William and Louise Fielder Collection.

The dies for Demetrios' coinage from Chalkis are the finest of the series. Although the Hunterian catalog does not identify a control mark in the outer left field, Newell saw that one was there, but could not identify it due to the weak peripheral strike on that specimen.
