THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES. The Bottiaei(?). Circa 520-480 BC. AR Stater (9.73 gm). Cow standing right, head left, suckling calf that stands right below; three pellets above / Rough quadripartite incuse square. AMNG III pg. 135, 7 (uncertain tribe); HPM pl. XVIII, 9; Traité pl. XL, 8 (uncertain tribe); SNG ANS 923; Rosen 158 (uncertain tribe). Good VF, toned. ($1000)

The early dating of these coins to 520 BC rests primarily upon the type of incuse, with its diagonal separators. If the attribution to a Thraco-Macedonian tribe is correct, though, the absence of this type from the Asyut hoard suggests a date closer to 480 BC.
