CARACALLA. 198-217 AD Æ Sestertius (23.94 gm, 12h). Struck 201 AD. ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS, laureate, draped, and cuirassed young bust right, seen from front / VIRTV[S AVG]G PONT TR P I[I]II, [S C] in exergue, Caracalla standing left, placing right hand on trophy consisting of helmet, cuirass, and shields set on tree trunk, and holding spear in left hand; bound captives seated on either side at base of trophy. RIC IV 409 var. (bust seen from behind); Banti 139; BMCRE 803 var. (same); cf. Cohen 671. Good VF/VF, mottled dark green and yellow-green patina, light smoothing in fields. Extremely rare. ($1000)
