MAXIMIANUS. 285-305 AD. AV Post-Reform Aureus (5.40 gm, 12h). Antioch mint. Struck 296-297 AD. MAXIMIA-NVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head right / CONSVL V P P PRO COS, Maximianus standing left, holding globe in right hand and baton in left; •SMAS (S retrograde). RIC VI 12, pl. 15, 12 (same reverse die); Depeyrot 13/1; Pink, Goldprägung, pg. 49; Hunter -; DOC -; Calicó 4627 (this coin illustrated). EF, lustrous, light scratch in obverse field, small nick on cheek. Extremely rare. ($5000)

Ex Triton III (30 November - 1 December 1999), lot 1181.

RIC VI pg. 614, 12 describes the mintmark as reading •SMAS* (S retrograde), yet pl. 15, 12 does not show the * and is the same die as this coin. Depeyrot repeats the mistake in RIC citing the same coin. This is apparently only the second known specimen with this mintmark, the other is in the BM (cited and photographed in RIC).
