ANASTASIUS I. 491-518 AD. AV Solidus (4.42 gm, 6h). Thessalonica mint. DN ANASTAS IVS PERP AVG, diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder and shield / VICTORI A AVGGG, Victory standing left, holding long cross; stars flanking; CONOB. Cf. DOC I 27; cf. Metcalf, Thessalonica 239/253; cf. MIB I 14/15; SB 30. EF, a few light scuff marks, otherwise sharply struck and rare this nice. ($1000)

From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 60 (22 May 2002), lot 1971.

An unnoticed hybrid of MIB 14 and 15. MIB 14 has the obverse legend with PERP, with a reverse with a distinctive X-barred cross. MIB 15 has PP and a cross with straight crossarms. Sear combines the two varieties in one number (SB 30), but the examples illustrated by Metcalf display clear stylistic differences between the two groups, and they should be regarded as separate issues.
