D N IVSTINIANVS P P, diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right / Large I; ANNO XX/XIIII across field; all within wreath. DOC I -; MIB I 229a (Rome); SB 326. Choice EF, jade green patina. ($300)

From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 47 (16 September 1998), lot 2111 (incorrect regnal year).

Hahn assigns all the dated Italian 10 nummi to the mint of Rome, but on stylistic grounds Ravenna seems the proper attribution. These 10 nummi are generally noted with finer style portraits, and as capital of Byzantine Italy Ravenna would have attracted the most talented engravers.
