CONSTANTINE IV, Pogonatus. 668-685 AD. AV Solidus (4.34 gm, 6h). Italian (Naples?) mint. Struck 681-685 AD. P OCNS TA US PP A, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, with short beard, holding spear over shoulder and shield / VICTORA AVGU, cross potent on three steps; D:^/CONOB. DOC II -; Ricotti-Prina 31 (same obverse die; Pentapolis); cf. MIB III X2; SB 1230A. EF. Rare. ($2500)

From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection.

The attribution to Naples is a conjecture on the part of Hahn. Ricotti-Prina, with equal uncertainty, sees a mint operating in the region of the Pentapolis, a league of five cities, Rimini, Ancona, Fano, Pesaro, and Senigallia, on the Adriatic.
