TIBERIUS III (Apsimar). 698-705 AD. Æ Half Follis (2.79 gm, 6h). Syracuse mint. Facing bust, with short beard, wearing crown and cuirass, holding spear and shield; star in left field / Large K with O on upright; T/I-B/E around. DOC II -; Spahr -; MIB III -; SB -. Choice EF, dark green patina. Apparently unpublished; the only known Sicilian half follis of Tiberius III. ($500)

From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection.

Since early in the reign of Constans II, the tradition at Syracuse was for the emperor to be identified only by monogram on his bronze coinage. It is curious that Tiberius used his name on this unusual half follis.
