AFGHANISTAN. Ahmad Shah Durrani. 1747-1772. AV Mohur (10.83 gm, 1h). Shahjahanabad (Dehli) mint. Dated AH 1174, RY 14 (1760/61 AD). Legend with titles of Ahmad Shah in four lines; AH date / Legend in three lines with regnal year and mint; star mint mark. Cf. Kazan 1176; Album 3090; MWI -; cf. Friedberg 1; KM 766. Good VF. Rare variety with refined calligraphy. ($750)

Ahmad Shah seized Dehli twice in the waning years of the Mughal empire, once briefly in 1756 and again for thirteen months in 1760-1761. He defeated the rising Marathas at the battle of Panipat in January 1761, but ultimately was unable to hold northern India.
