William was the grandson of William III of Holland. His uncle William IV died at the battle of Staveren against the Frisians in 1345, and his mother Margarethe, married to the emperor Ludwig of Bavaria, became regent of Holland for her young son. Shortly after William came into his majority, it became clear he was mentally unbalanced and unable to rule, and Albrecht, Margarethe's second son became de facto ruler of Holland, being formally installed upon William's death in 1389.
