Quinctius Flamininus, Cato the Elder, Pompey and Cicero, accompanied by scenes of Roman history of the period // Christian Wermuth and studio, fl. 1686-1739. Lives of the Roman Emperors. AR 32mm medals with portraits and biographical information of Titus, Antoninus Pius, Macrianus, Regalianus, Florian and Avitus. Rarely encountered in silver. Average good VF. Eleven (11) pieces in lot. ($2000)

Good examples of the didactic medals popular in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Dassier series consisted of sixty medals covering Roman history from Romulus to Augustus, while Wermuth's huge portrait series of Roman and Byzantine emperors was continued by his students (some of these medals signed C PR CÆSAR) and eventually totaled 214 pieces. Usually seen in bronze and white metal, silver examples are scarce, and complete sets extraordinarily rare.
