CLAUDIUS. 41-54 AD. Æ Sestertius (31mm, 12.22 gm). Local imitation. Struck circa 50-54 AD(?). Laureate head right; countermark: DV within rectangular incuse / Spes walking left, holding flower and hem of skirt. Cf. RIC I 115. Coin Fine, countermark VF, green patina.
The DV countermark, not uncommon on 1st century bronzes, was a measure instituted by the government to retariff low-weight "sestertii" as dupondii in areas where there was a shortage of fiduciary coinage.
