KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.30 gm, 1h). Amphipolis mint. Struck under Kassander or Demetrios, circa 298-294 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Youth on horseback right, holding palm; thunderbolt and X below, ME monogram below raised foreleg. Le Rider pl. 48, 3; SNG ANS 810. Good VF. Choice centering and strike. This coin is representative of a late issue of posthumous Phillip tetradrachms from Amphipolis that present a curious feature. The youth on horseback, normally seen as an ephebe wearing a petasos or taenia, on these coins look remarkably feminized: the hair is tied back in a chignon and the body type is generally "rounder" than usual. Why this would occur is unknown.
