KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III. 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.61 gm, 1h). Uncertain Black Sea or Thracian mint. Struck late 3rd-early 2nd century BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; burning altar(?) in left field. Price -; N. Waggoner, "The Propontis Hoard,"
RN 1979, 159. VF, toned. ($300)
This interesting coin was omitted from Price's corpus. Although it may be a barbarous imitation, the overall style and accurate lettering do not preclude the possibility of an official issue of some small settlement or tribe. The attribution to the Black Sea or Thracian area is based on the coin's style and its inclusion in the Propontis hoard.
