SAMARIA. Circa 375-333 BCE. AR Hemiobol (0.24 gm, 3h). Mare standing right, suckling foal / Persian king slaying lion; Aramaic "S" (Samaria) between; all in incuse punch. Meshorer & Qedar 106. Good VF, toned. ($300)
Ex Classical Numismatic Group 63 (21 May 2003), lot 760.Although M&Q describe the type as a horse and gazelle, it seems more likely to depict a mare nursing her young foal. Such a scene appears often enough in ancient art, and turns up as a coin type on a bronze of Euagoras II of Cyprus (368-361 BC) -- SNG Copenhagen 55. The obverse and reverse are inverted from their order in M&Q.
