TRAJAN. 98-117 AD. Æ Sestertius (24.55 gm, 7h). Struck circa 115-116 AD. Laureate head right / VIA TRAIANA/S C in two lines in exergue, the Via Traiana reclining left on rock, head right, holding wheel and branch. RIC II 636 var. (drapery); BMCRE 986a; cf. Cohen 649. Good VF, hard dark green patina. ($750)

The Via Traiana, constructed at Trajan's own expense between 109 AD and 113 AD, replaced the Via Appia as the usual route between Brindisium to Beneventum.
