LEO III, the Isaurian. 717-741 AD. Æ Follis (1.78 gm, 6h). Catania mint. Struck 717-720 AD. Helmeted bust, holding spear over shoulder; K in right field / Large M; monogram above, [K] T flanking, cross below; [SCL in exergue]. DOC II -; Spahr -; MIB III -; SB -. Good VF, dark green patina. Apparently unique and unpublished. ($400)
A follis of Anastasius II (MIB 34; SB 1475B) has a similar reverse with K T flanking the M. This similar issue from the sole reign of Leo III is probably the last coin struck at Catania under the Byzantines.
