INDIA, Tribal issues. Telugu Chodas. Circa 1216-1316. AV Pagoda (3.61 gm). Bhujabala coinage. Uniface coin with multiple punchmarks. Center with stylized lion left with raised forepaw; around are four similar lions facing right, two "Sri" and two sun-sceptre-moon punches. Cf. Mitchiner, South I 313; MNI 687 var. Good VF. ($500)

The Chodas were feudatories of the Cholas, who had held the Deccan since the 11th century. This coin varies from the published specimens in having four of the five lions facing right rather than left, and replacing a Telugu "bhujabala" punch with a second sun-sceptre-moon punch. A similar coin in Baldwin's 33 (7 May 2003) has all five lions facing right, attributed to the Chalukyas of Kalyani.
