Ex Classical Numismatic Review XXI/1 (Spring 1996), lot SP245-32.

An attempt to foster peaceful relations between the Khwarizmshahs of Persia and the Mongols went horribly wrong when a greedy Persian governor robbed and massacred a Mongol diplomatic mission. The resulting war ended in the death of Shah Ala al-Din and the the complete conquest of Persia by Chingiz Khan. Jalal al-Din, the son of Shah Ala al-Din, held out at the end in Ghazna before fleeing to India in 1222. These rare dinars, one of the few gold issues in Chingiz Khan's name, were struck from the looted treasury of Ghazna.
