FRANCE. Collection of twenty bronze medals from the series Galerie metallique des grandes hommes Français. All struck 1818-1825. Diameter 41mm. A large series of medals honoring prominent Frenchmen of history, designed by leading medallists of the day. The medals in this series were struck mainly between 1816 and 1826 although dates as late as 1838 are known. All the medals feature a portrait of the subject with simple biographical information on the reverse. Jean-Pierre Collignon in
La medaille francaise au XIX siecle et l'histoire lists 119 medals in the series, with many pieces being re-struck at later periods. These all appear to be originals with plain edges. Included is a twenty-first medal, of the same type, from a similar series honoring famous Europeans. Average EF condition, mostly with original chocolate or mahogany patinas, although a few others have been dipped at some point. A few with verdigris on the edges. Twenty-one (21) pieces total in lot.
