GREEK. Silver protome of a satyr's head. Circa 3rd-2nd century BC. Length 30mm. Hollow cast silver applique ornament with a high relief head of a leering satyr. Devilish pointed chin and nose with curling horns. Deeply incised details of teeth, eyes, ears and hair. Eyes may have been inlaid originally. Wonderful example of the Hellenistic Greek love of the grotesque. Some horn silver and slight pitting, otherwise in choice condition. ($500)
