ANGLO-SAXON. Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor. 1042-1066. AR Penny (20mm, 1.49 gm, 6h). Contemporary imitation or forgery of expanding cross type, 1050-1053, Thetford mint; Leofwine, moneyer. +•EDPIRD RECX, diademed bust left, holding sceptre / +LEOFPINE ON DEODF, expanding voided cross, center with two circles and pellet. SCBI 18 (Copenhagen), 1231 (same dies); cf. North 823; cf. SCBC 1177. Fine, bent and straightened. Rare surviving 11th century Anglo-Saxon counterfeit.
Although the Copenhagen specimen is recorded as a genuine issue these coins are certainly imitations or forgeries based on their light weight, poor alloy, and crude workmanship.
