SICILY, Himera. Circa 440-425 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 16.99 g). Charioteer driving quadriga right, holding kentron and reins; Nike flying left above, crowning charioteer / Himera, standing front, head turned left, holding patera over altar, left hand raised; to right, a satyr bathing in fountain beneath lion-headed spout; swastika in upper left field, barley grain in upper right field. Cf. Arnold-Biucchi, "La Monetazione D'Argento Di Himera,"
QT XVII (1988), Group III, 21 (Q7/H16 - re-engraved); cf. Gutmann & Schwabacher 19 (Q7/H14 - re-engraved); SNG ANS 167 var. Near VF, toned. Very rare.
Gutmann-Schwabacher die H14, in it's earlier die state, does not have the swastika in the upper left field. Late dies state examples of die H14 (see McClean 2298) show the die break at Himera's feet as on this example, but no trace of the swastika. Two other examples with the swastika are recorded; Hess-Leu Auktion (24 March 1959), lot 66 and Triton I, lot 223. The present example shows the bottom leg of the swastika above Himera's arm.
