OSTROGOTHS? Athalaric? Circa 526-534 AD. Æ Follis of 42 Nummi (27mm, 10.42 gm, 6h). XLII cut into the obverse of an As of Domitian with Fides reverse. MIB I 14; MEC 1, 85 see C. Morrison, "The Re-use of Obsolete Coins" in Studies in Numismatic Method pp.95-111. Coin Fair, validation mark clear. Rare and unusual.

Not technically countermarked pieces, these chisel-cut bronzes consist of early sestertii and asses, usually found in Italy, where they circulated as the equivalent of 1/3 (83 nummi) and 1/6 (42 nummi) of a late Roman siliqua. Apparently a large hoard of 1st century bronzes was discovered in Italy in the early 6th century, and the coins were re-validated for use in circulation.
