CELTIC, Danube Region. Uncertain tribe (probably Dacian). 1st century BC. AR Denarius (4.02 g, 2h). Imitating Roman Republican moneyers L. Farsuleius Mensor and L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi. Diademed, laureate, and draped bust of Liberty right; SC MENSOZ (z retrograde) before, cap of Liberty and XI behind / Horseman riding right, holding palm branch; HSISOEHCI/S (first & last S retrograde) in two lines below. Davis class A/II; Lanz -; KMW -; CCCBM I -. VF, partial flat strike. ($200)

This imitation combines an obverse imitating the moneyer L. Farsuleius Mensor (cf. Crawford 392/1a-b) with a reverse imitating L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi (cf. Crawford 340/1). It is interesting that although the symbol, number, and legend on the obverse are closely copied from Mensor's coinage, the bust of Liberty integrates the laurel wreath and long hairstyle of the Apollo from Frugi's coinage.
