HADRIAN. 117-138 AD. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (11.03 g, 1h). Ephesus mint. Struck after 128 AD. Bare head right / Aesculapius standing left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff; c/m: IMP (ligate) VES AV(AV ligate) G in incuse. For coin: RIC II 481; cf. Metcalf, Cistophori, type 20, 89-93 (O67/R-; unlisted rev. die); BMCRE 1053, note; RSC 290; for c/m: Howgego 840 and Pangerl 101. VF. Overstruck on an uncertain cistophorus which bore the IMP VES AVG countermark. ($500)

Struck from the same obverse die as the previous lot. The countermark was present on the undertype and was not obliterated by the overstrike.
