JUSTINIAN II. Second reign, 705-711 AD. Æ Follis (2.98 g, 6h). Syracuse mint. Dated IY 4 (705/6 AD). Crowned facing half-length bust, holding globus cruciger and akakia / Large M; monogram above, crosses flanking; in exergue, date above SCL. DOC II 57 (1st reign); Spahr 215 (1st reign); BBS 47 (1st reign); MIB III 48b; SB 1297 (1st reign). Good VF, dark green patina. Exceptionally clear strike on a large flan. Overstruck on a follis of his first reign, SB 1304. ($150)
The overstrike evidence would seem to support Hahn's attribution of this type as the first issue of Justinian's second reign, dated to make a public record of his return to the throne.
