INDIA, Islamic Sultanates. Bengal. Ghiyath al-Din 'Iwad, in the name of Shams al-Din Iltutmish, Sultan of Dehli. AH 614-616 (1217-1220 AD). AV 40 Rati (4.59 g, 12h). No mint. Dated AH 614 (1217/8 AD). Man left on horseback, holding up mace; Shahada and "year 614" in outer margin / "The very great Sultan, Shams of the world and [the faith], father of the Victor, Iltutmish. CIS B11; Rajgor 849; Mitchiner, Land 156; MWI -. VF, partial flat strike. Very rare. ($3000)

'Iwad was governor of Bengal under Iltutmish, but in 1220 declared himself an independent sultan. Iltutmish invaded Bengal and in 1225 forced 'Iwad's submission, but the issue was not really resolved until 'Iwad's death in 1227.
