Aurangzeb became Viceroy of the Deccan in 1636. He established his capital at a town called Fathapur, and renamed it after himself-Aurangabad. It was from Aurangabad that Aurangzeb launched his coup against his ailing father Shah Jahan and elder brother Dara Shikoh, seizing the Peacock Throne in 1658. After his death the city's name was changed to Kunjista Bunyad, although in modern times it is once again known as Aurangabad.
