LURISTAN. Bronze whetstone handle. 9th-7th century BC. Length 85mm. A cast bronze implement handle with rounded socket, in the form of a three-dimensional crouching ibex with long horns curling over its back. The animal is fully rendered with limbs curled under its body and careful attention paid to the details of head and horns. Handle pierced for attachment of whetstone. Cf. Moorey,
Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Ashmolean Museum, 105. This example is of a much more refined style. Choice condition, with variegated green and red-brown patina. One curved horn was recently broken off and has been re-attached. A fine Luristan bronze. ($1000)
